When Olivia Bennett saw Vanessa Cross again after 10 years, she nearly spilled an entire glass of champagne down the front of her dress. It happened at her university’s alumni reunion in a hotel ballroom filled with familiar faces, overpriced drinks, and people pretending they had enjoyed college more than they actually had. Olivia, now 32, had expected awkward conversations with former classmates and perhaps an embarrassing encounter with an ex-boyfriend. She had not expected her. Vanessa stood near the windows in a fitted black evening suit. A deep burgundy silk blouse opened slightly at the collar and elegant black heels. Her extremely long dark brown hair fell in glossy waves down her back. Her gay green eyes were sharp beneath perfectly shaped brows, and her tall, graceful figure carried the kind of quiet confidence that made people turn when she entered a room.

At 22, Vanessa had been a shy literature student who wore oversized sweaters, hid behind her glasses, and blushed whenever Olivia spoke to her. Now she looked like a woman who could ruin someone’s evening with a single raised eyebrow. Unfortunately, Olivia had given her a very good reason to ruin hers. 10 years earlier, Vanessa had confessed her feelings outside the university library, holding a small bunch of flowers and looking as though she might faint. Olivia had liked her more than she had dared admit, but she had been frightened of what dating another woman might mean for her life. So, she had said no. Worse, she had said it carelessly. You’re sweet, Vanessa, but I could never see you that way.

Vanessa had smiled, thanked her for being honest, and avoided her for the rest of their final semester. Olivia had spent a decade wishing she could take those words back. Now, Vanessa looked directly at her across the ballroom, lifted her champagne glass in a tiny greeting, and smiled as though Olivia were an amusing coincidence. Olivia considered escaping through the nearest service door. Instead, Vanessa approached her. Olivia Bennett. Her voice was lower than Olivia remembered, smooth and calm. Still looking for an exit whenever things get uncomfortable. Olivia blinked. You remember that? You did it during every difficult presentation. Vanessa’s mouth curved and once during a conversation with me.

Heat rushed into Olivia’s face. I deserved that. Probably. Vanessa took a sip of champagne, looking thoroughly unbothered. How have you been? Olivia managed to explain that she worked as a book editor, lived across the city, and had recently adopted an elderly cat. Vanessa, it turned out, had become a successful novelist. Olivia had read two of her books without realizing who had written them because Vanessa published under a pen name. You wrote The Winter Between Us? Olivia asked horrified. You made me cry on a train. I’ll try not to apologize. The ending was cruel. Some people take 10 years to say what they should have said at the beginning. Vanessa watched her over the rim of her glass. Olivia’s heart performed a painful little somersault. Before she could reply, a former classmate appeared and asked Vanessa to join a group photograph.

Vanessa glanced at Olivia. Don’t disappear. I haven’t finished making you uncomfortable. Olivia stared after her, wondering when the shy girl from the library had learned to flirt like a professional assassin. Their next encounter happened 3 days later at a small independent bookstore. Olivia was reaching for Vanessa’s newest novel when a familiar voice behind her said, “I’m told the ending is less cruel.” Olivia turned to find Vanessa wearing a fitted charcoal turtleneck, dark trousers, and a long black coat, her dark hair loose over her shoulders. “Are you following me?” Olivia asked. “It’s my signing event.” Olivia looked toward the front of the shop where an enormous poster displayed Vanessa’s face. “Right, excellent.

I’m going to move countries now.” Vanessa laughed. A real laugh this time and Olivia suddenly remembered the girl who used to laugh into her sleeve during lectures. After the event, Vanessa found Olivia browsing the poetry section. “Coffee?” she asked. Olivia stared. “With me?” “Unless you see another Olivia Bennett hiding behind the poetry shelf.” They went to a cafe around the corner and talked for 2 hours. Vanessa told her about moving abroad after graduation, struggling through years of rejection letters, and eventually finding success. Olivia told her about her work and her cat, who had recently developed a personal vendetta against the curtains. The conversation was easy until Olivia finally said about what happened in college. Vanessa sat down her cup. You don’t owe me an explanation.

I know, but I owe you an apology. Vanessa’s expression softened slightly. Olivia forced herself to continue. I was scared, not of you, of admitting what I wanted. I said something cruel because I thought if I made you stop hoping, I could stop hoping, too. Vanessa looked down at her coffee. It worked, she said quietly. Olivia’s chest tightened. I know. After a moment, Vanessa lifted her gaze. I liked you for a long time, Olivia. Getting over you wasn’t quick. I’m sorry. I believe you. She smiled faintly. But I’m not that girl anymore. Olivia discovered just how much Vanessa had changed over the following weeks. She was still thoughtful and observant, still carried a paperback in every bag, still remembered how Olivia liked her tea. But she was no longer afraid to say exactly what she wanted.

She began inviting Olivia to dinner, sending her sarcastic messages about terrible book covers, and appearing at the cafe near Olivia’s office with two takeaway drinks, and the excuse that she had accidentally ordered an extra. On their third unofficial date, Olivia wore a fitted forest green blouse and black trousers, and Vanessa spent an entire dinner looking at her with a small, knowing smile. “What?” Olivia finally asked. “Nothing. You’ve been staring at me? Yes. Olivia almost dropped her fork. You’re supposed to deny it. Why? Vanessa leaned forward slightly. Does it bother you? No. Good. Olivia’s pulse jumped. Vanessa’s gaze briefly dropped to her mouth before she returned to her dinner as if nothing had happened.

The worst part was that Olivia had started doing the same thing. She noticed Vanessa’s hands when she turned the pages of a book. the graceful way she tucked her long hair behind one ear and how her voice softened when she was tired. At a crowded book launch, Vanessa placed a hand lightly at Olivia’s waist to guide her past a group of guests. Olivia nearly forgot how to walk. Vanessa noticed immediately. Still nervous around me, she whispered. Olivia looked at her. You’re enjoying this immensely. But when Olivia’s expression became serious, Vanessa’s teasing softened. Tell me if I’m making you uncomfortable. Olivia swallowed. You’re not. Vanessa’s thumb brushed once against the fabric at her waist before she stepped back, leaving Olivia wishing she hadn’t.

The moment everything changed came on a rainy Friday evening at Vanessa’s apartment. Olivia had gone over to help review the opening chapters of Vanessa’s new novel, and 3 hours later, they were sitting close together on a dark velvet sofa, surrounded by manuscript pages and two forgotten mugs of tea. Vanessa had changed into a fitted black long-sleeve top and soft charcoal trousers. Her extremely long dark hair falling freely down her back. Olivia wore a cream knit sweater and black jeans. Her shoulderlength honey blonde hair slightly messy from the rain. “This scene doesn’t work,” Olivia said, tapping a paragraph. Vanessa looked over her shoulder. “Why? Your heroine knows she’s in love, but she keeps pretending she isn’t. readers will get frustrated. Vanessa studied her. Perhaps she’s afraid. Then she should say so. What if she already hurt the woman she loves? Olivia looked up. Vanessa was much closer than she had realized.

Then she should apologize, Olivia whispered. And what if the other woman has changed? Maybe she should get to know her again. Vanessa’s gray green eyes moved over Olivia’s face. and if she still wants her. Olivia’s heart hammered. Then she should stop talking about fictional characters. Vanessa went completely still. Olivia set the manuscript aside with trembling hands. I was wrong about you, she said softly. Back then, I saw you exactly the way I wanted to see you because it was easier than admitting I liked you. Vanessa’s expression changed. Olivia, I know you don’t owe me another chance. Olivia took a breath, but I want one.

Not because you came back looking different, because I’ve spent the last few weeks remembering how much I liked the girl who brought me flowers and discovering how much I like the woman sitting next to me now. Vanessa looked at her for a long moment. Then she reached out and gently caught Olivia’s hand. You really have terrible timing. Olivia laughed nervously. I know. 10 years ago I would have fainted if you’d said that. And now Vanessa moved closer. Now I’d rather you showed me. Olivia’s eyes dropped to her mouth. Can I kiss you? Vanessa smiled, but there was something vulnerable beneath it. I’ve been waiting 10 years for you to ask. Olivia kissed her. The first kiss was soft, almost hesitant, but Vanessa’s hand settled at Olivia’s waist and drew her closer. Olivia’s fingers slipped into Vanessa’s long dark hair, and Vanessa made a quiet sound against her lips that sent warmth rushing through…
